Tennessee Theatre 604 South Gay Street, Knoxville, TN, 37902

The design in the interior that has mainly Spanish-Moorish style was done by Chicago architects Graven & Mayger. The design also contains elements from different areas from around the world including chandeliers with their French style, Italian terrazzo, crystals in Czechoslovakian mode and a lot more. The building was the first public building to contain air conditioning in the city of Knoxville, and it had also an attractive Wurlitzer Organ.

During its peak days, the theatre hosted world movies premieres such as All the Way Home in 1963 or the So This is Love in 1953. In 1966, the theatre was renovated and due to that, its capacity was reduced to 1545. The owners of theatre had been changed over times, and it was even closed in some times as it was the case in late 1970s. In 1982, the theatre was included in the list of National Register of Historic Places.

Parts of October Sky film that was produced in 1999 were filmed in the surrounding of Knoxville city, and theatre’s façade can be seen in a scene. Lately, the Appalachian Ballet was based at the theatre in addition to Knoxville Symphony Orchestra as well as Knoxville Opera. In 2003, the theatre saw again renovations including the enhancement of acoustics, and expansions of the stage, modernization of the lighting and a lot more.
